A regulation...

Why?

In order to ensure the safety of all the City of Laval a regulation was established concerning the installation of a swimming pool on your property.

This regulation is exclusively on fences which must surround any swimming pool, their placement, materials and the documents necessary to carry out your project.

The purpose of this information is to guide you, so that you can easily conform to the present regulation.

A fence is compulsory!

Any swimming pool in which the depth is higher than 18 inches (46 cm) of water must be completely surrounded by a fence meeting the standards established by the city.

Above ground pool 

Dimensions of the fence

Height: maximum of 6 feet (1,83 m)

                             minimum of 4 feet (1,22 m)

Note: the height is measured starting from the level of the ground, where the fence will be set up, at the place where the ground level is the highest.

Placement of the fence

minimum distance of 2 feet (61 cm) between the fence and the external edge of the swimming pool;

Underground pool

Dimensions of the fence

Height: maximum of 6 feet (1,83 m)

             minimum of 4 feet (1,22 m)

Note: the height is measured starting from the level of the ground, where the fence will be set up, at the place where the ground level is the highest.

Placement of the fence

minimal distance of 4 feet (1,22 m) between the fence and the external edge of the swimming pool.

Materials

A fence out of wood manufactured with new materials, planed, painted, varnished or dyed;

Documents

The certificate...

Before building or installing a swimming pool, it is necessary to get a certificate of authorization from the City of Laval urban planning department.

The request for the permit must be accompanied by the following documents:

Three copies of the plan indicating the site of the swimming pool on the property;

a detailed estimate of materials planned for the installation or the construction of the swimming pool and the fence

the presentation of the certificate of localization and a copy of your tax form.

Fees

The cost of the permit for the installation or the construction of a swimming pool is established as follows:

50 $ for a residential swimming pool (1 to 4 residences);

100 $ for a residential swimming pool (5 residences and more), institutional or commercial.

Advise

The gate!

The gate giving access to the swimming pool above ground or underground must be provided with an automatic closure. The mechanism for opening the gate must be placed at a level putting it out of reach for young children.

Noise!

Install the motor and the heat pump so that the noise does not constitute a harmful effect for the neighbors.

Accidents!

Before installing or building a swimming pool, please communicate with information excavation, in order to locate any servitude's on your property, no swimming pool should be installed on a servitude of Hydro-Quebec or Bell.

A particular attention must be given during the installation of a swimming pool and a fence at a corner lot, it is being regulated under a particular regulation.
